This month we opened our 400th UK store following a strong market performance with 16.8% sales growth and a 12.2% rise in shopper numbers in January and February 2009.
Group Managing Director of Aldi UK and Ireland, explains: "Usually, during economic uncertainty, people retire into their comfort zones and stick to what they know. This isn’t the case, as we’re finding more of our shoppers are using us for their whole shop instead of top-up shopping, as they switch from the supermarkets and brands they are more familiar with."
"More consumers are understanding the Aldi offer; that we sell high quality own labels in a no nonsense way to offer everyday essentials at affordable prices."
Independent data from TNS Worldpanel showed that Aldi recorded year-on-year growth of 16.3% for the 12 weeks ending 22nd March. Testament to the growing popularity of Aldi, hundreds of shoppers queued from the early hours of Thursday morning for the 400th store opening in Exeter. An opening-day promotion offered the first 100 people in line the chance to win prizes ranging from digital cameras, TVs and champagne to money-off vouchers.
