The Taste of Grapes

The taste of grapes

First, of course, let's get one thing straight: wines are made from grapes and no other fruit. There are, for example, no blackberries in any of our Cabernet Sauvignon, or peaches in our Burlwood Chardonnay. Those flavours, like all the others, are simply the result of the wine reacting on the 9,000 taste buds that surround the tongue. Those at the front detect glucose and sucrose sweetness, those in the middle salt and fructose (natural fruit sugar) while the ones at the back react to acidic and sour tastes.

However, wines do have distinctive fruit and even vegetable aromas and flavours. We hope that the following descriptions of the smell and taste of many of the more popular grapes will help bring you more enjoyment and pleasure from our wines. But we should point out that these smells and tastes can vary depending upon the different climates and soils in which the vines are planted and grown.
