Recycling tips everyone should know

We can all do our bit to reduce, recycle and reuse. Here are some useful hints and tips to follow to ensure you’re recycling correctly.

  • Rinse and repeat

It’s a really good idea to rinse out containers before popping them in the recycling bin to avoid contamination from food and other residue.
  • Save space

Compress bottles and put the lid back on to make extra space and ensure smaller parts get recycled.
  • Peel off the plastic

Make sure you remove the plastic windows from sandwich wrappers so they can be recycled.

Recycling symbols explained

It’s easy to identify how different packaging can be recycled when you know how. Learn more about the symbols here and remember to check your local area’s recycling rules, as they can vary in different places.

Always read the small writing above the recycle logos so you know what you need to do before recycling.

Don’t bin it! Get creative with it!

Turn your old recycling into crafty projects, like this Paper Roll Shark, our Bird Feeder, Herb Plant Pots and Tin Pen Holders. All easy and affordable ways to keep the kids entertained.

  • Design

Take a kitchen roll tube and mark out the mouth and tail of the shark.
  • Cut

Get an adult to cut out the marked sections, then draw and cut 2 fins and a tail using cut-offs. Cut out 2 sets of teeth from white card.
  • Decorate

Paint everything except the teeth and allow to dry. Glue the pieces in place and add googly eyes!

Our amazing juice carton bird feeder

Instagram influencer and Mum to Rupurt, @leaahiggins, shows you how to repurpose household recycling and make a bird feeder for your garden!

“Now that we have so much time at home, it’s hard to find new things to entertain the kids. Rupert has been swiftly going through all his toys and enjoying spending time in the garden. We challenged ourselves to make a bird feeder out of everyday household rubbish that would otherwise be recycled. It was a really great afternoon activity that we both enjoyed.”

  • Using an empty juice carton, cut out a window.
  • Paint the carton.
  • Decorate it with googly eyes and felt wings.
  • Thread string through the top to hang it from a tree. Add bird seed ready for the birds to enjoy!

Here’s how we’re reducing plastic every day

Every day we’re working really hard towards reducing plastic and packaging waste. We know there’s lots more to do, but we’ve made a great start. You might like to know…

  • We’ve removed single-use carrier bags, saving 900 tonnes of plastic annually. Amazing!
  • 131 tonnes of plastic packaging have been saved from our Mamia nappies and wipes.
  • 34 million pieces of single-use plastic are being removed from all lids on our own-label fresh cream and ready-to-drink coffee products.
  • We’ve saved more than 14 tonnes of plastic a year by being one of the first supermarkets to remove plastic applicators from our own-brand tampons.
