1. 10,000 Trees Planted
Aldi partnered with GreenTheUK and the Royal Forestry Society (RFS) to help plant 10,000 climate-resilient trees in the UK.
Woodlands play a crucial role in climate change mitigation by storing carbon, stabilising soils and reducing flood risks. Planting a diverse mix of native and non-native tree species helps improve woodland resilience and biodiversity, supporting their ability to withstand increasingly frequent and extreme weather events.
We hope that these new habitats will support a range of woodland wildlife, including birds, mammals, invertebrates, reptiles and amphibians.

2. 5 Hectares of Wildflower Meadow Restored
In partnership with GreenTheUK and Buglife, Aldi is helping to restore wildflower habitat across the UK. 1.66 hectares has already been created in County Durham, UK, as part of its efforts to enhance pollinator habitats and biodiversity.
Insects such as bees, hoverflies, moths, and beetles play a vital role in ecosystems and global food production through pollination. Wildflower restoration is recognised as a key intervention to support pollinators by providing nectar, pollen, and nesting habitats.
Aldi has committed to restoring a total of 5 hectares of wildflower-rich meadow, helping to restore vital pollinator networks while strengthening local biodiversity and community green spaces. Three sites were selected for their ecological potential and strong links to nearby residential areas and Aldi sites.

3. Crab and Lobster Populations Surveyed
The Sussex coastline once supported extensive kelp forests, yet decades of trawling, storms and human pressures have left these habitats depleted, with over 96 per cent of kelp having disappeared since 1987. In March 2021, the Sussex Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities (IFCA) implemented the Sussex Nearshore Trawling Byelaw to protect essential fish habitats, including kelp, within Sussex Bay. Since then, there has been a growing focus on assessing the ecological, social, and economic impact of this byelaw on habitat recovery and commercial species. In 2025, via GreenTheUK, Aldi contributed to this effort by supporting Blue Marine Foundation’s long-term potting surveys, which evaluate the influence of the byelaw on key commercial species such as European lobster and brown crab.

4. Protecting Temperate Rainforests
Aldi, in partnership with GreenTheUK and Plantlife, is supporting the protection of rare temperate rainforests in the Southwest.
The climatic conditions required to form temperate rainforest occur over less than 1% of the planet, where specific coastal weather, rainfall, and humidity conditions align. They host unique species but face threats from overgrowth, invasive species, and biodiversity loss.
Through specialised management and careful, seasonal stewardship, Plantlife aims to safeguard and help these delicate ecosystems recover and thrive for the future.

5. Restoring native oyster reefs on the South Coast
Through GreenTheUK, Aldi has committed to supporting a native oyster restoration project led by Blue Marine Foundation within protected areas of the Solent. An estimated 85 percent of oyster beds and oyster reef habitats have been lost worldwide. This project aims to revive the numerous benefits of oyster reefs, such as improvements in water quality, biodiversity, and coastal defences. The project involves placing mature oysters on newly laid natural reef materials to promote repopulation and spawning. Across the wider lifetime of the restoration programme, more than 150,000 oysters have been restored into nurseries and onto reefs.

Events
Oyster Cleaning Event in Portsmouth
In May 2025, Laura and Holly from the National Sustainability Team travelled down to Portsmouth to assist in the preparation of native oysters prior to their deployment into Solent. They spent the day cleaning native oysters with wire brushes to remove any other organisms before measuring and tagging them for monitoring. The event welcomed over 150 people over 3 days, with a total of 10,545 oysters deployed onto the reef.
Climate & Carbon Emissions Event
In September 2025, the National Sustainability team led a Climate and Carbon Event at the Atherstone Head Office to educate and engage colleagues on climate issues, and the biodiversity projects Aldi has supported on land and at sea. There were games and prizes on offer, as well as a Fairtrade bake sale to showcase some of the Fairtrade ingredients available at Aldi.
