Mega Mince Pie
Serves: 10-12 | Prep Time: 20 mins | Cook Time: 40-45 mins
A giant festive mince pie made for sharing, packed with rich mincemeat and wrapped in buttery golden pastry.
Ingredients
For the Pastry
- 500g ready-made shortcrust pastry
- Plain flour, for dusting
- 1 medium egg, beaten
For the Filling
- 800g mincemeat
- 1 eating apple, grated
- 50g chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
- Zest of 1 orange
- 1 tsp mixed spice
To Finish
- Icing sugar, for dusting
Method
- Preheat the oven to 190°C / 170°C Fan / Gas Mark 5.
- Grease a 23cm loose-bottomed tart tin.
- Roll out two-thirds of the pastry and use it to line the tin, leaving a slight overhang.
- In a bowl, mix together the mincemeat, grated apple, orange zest and mixed spice.
- Spoon the filling into the pastry case and spread evenly.
- Roll out the remaining pastry and place over the top. Alternatively, cut into strips for a lattice effect.
- Trim and crimp the edges to seal.
- Brush the pastry with beaten egg.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes until deep golden brown and crisp.
- Leave to cool for at least 15 minutes before removing from the tin.
- Dust generously with icing sugar before serving.
